Thomas Daniell and his nephew William were among the first British artists to travel to India, where they arrived in 1786. They spent two years in Calcutta, where they published a series of aquatints, Views of Calcutta. Between 1788 and 1791 they travelled extensively throughout Northern India, drawing and recording any picturesque scene or interesting building that attracted them and producing vast numbers of drawings which have been beautifully re printed and framed in the United Kingdom.
