The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, reigned in India, from 1628-1658. His name in Persian means ‘King of the World’ and he was one of the greatest patrons of Mughal architecture. His most famous building was the Taj Mahal, built as a tribute to his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal who died in childbirth in 1631. The imperial court documenting Shah Jehan’s grief after her death, illustrates the love story held as the inspiration for this translucent white marble monument with its sprawling landscaped formal gardens, fountains and walls inlaid with semi-precious and precious stones. The Taj Mahal took 22yrs to build, a 1000 elephants to transport building materials, 22000 artisans and architects and is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the World .
